After surgical tooth extraction?

Patient information

What to do after surgery

After the operation, painkillers (e.g. Cataflam, Advil Ultra Forte) may be necessary. In some cases, antibiotics (e.g. Dalacin) may be recommended. For certain conditions (e.g. heart disease), antibiotics should be started before the operation! You should not eat anything while the painkillers are working. Dairy products (milk, cheese, kefir, yoghurt) should not be consumed for a week after the operation. Stitches will be removed one week after surgery. It is possible that the wound may still cause symptoms.

Brushing your teeth

The immediate area around the wound and the sutures should be cleaned with a soft toothbrush or toothpaste applied to the fingertip from the day after surgery. Brush your teeth on the day of surgery! It is recommended to use an antiseptic mouth rinse (e.g. Chlorhexamed, Corsodyl) 2 times a day. Sometimes a suture may fall out on its own during the healing process, but this is not a problem. Complete ossification of the tooth site takes several weeks after the sutures have been removed. Sometimes there is a depression in the tooth where food debris can easily stick, so extra care is needed to keep it clean.

Jegging

Cold compresses help to reduce swelling and pain. Ice gel or ice packs wrapped in dry clothes are best for icing. Ice should be applied gently, occasionally removing the ice and allowing the skin to rest. Icing is important for the first 1-2 days after the procedure.

We wish you all the best!

Possible complications

Wound infection

If you develop a fever after the operation, the wound becomes more painful, swelling increases and pus may ooze from the wound, you may need wound cleaning and antibiotic treatment.

Broken jaw

If the chewing is painful on both sides and the teeth are closing differently from usual, a fresh OP and a medical check-up are recommended.

Nerve injury (lower teeth)

If the anaesthetic does not wear off completely in the days following the operation and numbness remains in the lower lip on the side of the operation, the possibility of nerve injury is raised. In such cases, vitamin B supplementation is recommended.

Opening of the maxillary sinus (upper teeth)

If the operation is followed by bloody nose, nasal congestion and facial pain, the sinus may have opened. In this case, antibiotics and nasal drops are recommended.

If you experience these, contact your doctor urgently.

What to do after surgery

After the operation, both painkillers (Cataflam, 3x1 tablet/day) and antibiotics (Dalacin-C, 4x1 tablet/day) are necessary. In some diseases (e.g. heart disease), antibiotics should be started before the operation! Do not eat anything while the painkillers are working. Dairy products (milk, cheese, kefir, yoghurt) should not be consumed for a week after the operation. Stitches will be removed one week after surgery. It is possible that the wound may still cause symptoms. If you are sensitive to any of the listed medications, please make sure you mention this before the operation.

It is recommended to use an antiseptic mouth rinse (e.g. Chlorhexamed, Corsodyl) 2 times a day. Sometimes a suture may fall out on its own during the healing process, but this is not a problem. It takes several months for the implant(s) to fully ossify. During this time a metal locking screw may be visible at the site of the implant(s). This is where plaque can adhere more easily, so extra care is needed to keep it clean. If the screw loosens or falls out, remove it and contact your doctor urgently.

Cold compresses help to reduce swelling and pain. Ice gel or ice packs wrapped in dry clothes are best for icing. Icing is important for the first 1-2 days after the procedure, for 10 minutes at a time, followed by a rest period.
